Resources for New Believers

Witnessing (Telling Your Story)

You have a story to tell.  An account of how your life has changed since you became a Christian.  It is important to share our testimony (story) with others as this is one of the most effective ways to win people to Christ.  God uses our mouths to tell about His love and forgiveness.  It brings Him glory and it strengthens our faith.

Most new believers are so excited about being forgiven and seeing life through new eyes, they have no problem telling others what God has done and how Jesus has helped them become a different person.  We get so excited, sometimes we scare people off!  And why not, we were dead (in our sins) and Jesus brought us back to life!  That’s more than exciting; it’s miraculous!!  I don’t know about you, but I would run if I saw a dead man get out of the casket.  This new life we have is frightening to those who haven’t experienced it.  It convicts them of their sin and need for a Savior.

So it’s okay to be excited. Even though we always want to be spontaneous when asked about the change in us, we need to learn some key elements in how to tell our story.  The way we tell our story can either draw people to the Lord or push them away.

How do you tell your story?

Take a good look at your life before and after you became a believer and write it down just the way you would tell it to someone.  A few things to remember when putting your story together:

  1. The people you use in your story should be self and Jesus.  (For example, I was lost in a sinful lifestyle, but I heard about how Jesus….) You don’t want to preach.  Let the    Holy Spirit do the work in another person’s heart.
  2. Keep it simple!  Don’t be graphic about your past.  Sin is sin.  Be brief!  Sharing your story in 5 minutes or less is plenty of time to get the point across.
  3. Make sure Jesus is key!  Tell how He has changed your life.
  4. Use a favorite Scripture verse that helped you make your decision for Christ and one that encourages you through the down times. God’s Word is powerful and will impact the one listening.
  5. Whenever you get the chance to share your story, make sure your face radiates what you feel - SMILE!
  6. Speak in a spirit of humility and gratitude. (Remember where you came from.)

More important than sharing your story is how you live each day.  Your daily life is a story that can be read by everyone who is watching.  Some unsaved friends, co-workers, relatives, and neighbors may not ask what the change is in you; but they will see it.

Even strangers can be affected by your actions or reactions.  You may be the only Jesus some will ever see.
